An Evangelism Job Description
It is my absolute conviction that there is an evangelism revival sweeping through our churches and our country. 2 Corinthians 5:11-21 is perhaps the strongest description of what an evangelist should be. I find this passage to be a strong reminder for me and those I work with in trying to grow the Kingdom. Here are a few things I share concerning what makes an effective evangelist.
The first two are things we do not really like to talk about: persuasion and reputation. We are in the business of persuading people to follow Jesus. Not just providing information and leaving the decision up to them. We must convince men. Your reputation matters. Who you are will be known to your friends and family. Use that. They may have known you before Christ. They certainly know who you are now in Christ. We offer a living witness to the goodness of God.
It is the love of Jesus that compels us to share the story of Jesus. His love for us and His love for others. His love invites others to stop living for themselves and instead live for the one who died for them and was raised from the dead.
We do not see people as the world does. We do not focus our eyes on race, nationality, or status. We see the people God made. People God loves. People for whom Jesus died.
We are persuading people to enter into new life. To become a new creation.
We have been reconciled to God, and He entrusts us with the message of reconciliation: that people can be reconciled to God through Jesus, with their sins no longer counted against them.
So we are ambassadors for Christ. God makes His appeal through us. We represent God and Jesus in our words and in our actions.
Never forget the message: God made Jesus, who knew no sin, to be sin for us, so that we could become the righteousness of God.
I want to be part of what God is doing in this world. So do you.
Let’s do it.
