The Ten Plagues and the Jesus Way
They don’t know the stories. New Christians do not know the stories that many of us grew up knowing, or have learned in our Bible study. Not only do they not know many of the Bible stories, but they also don’t really know what to do with them when they do learn them. It is good to learn how the stories fit into the overarching story of Jesus and God’s saving work. But they also need to know that the great stories from Scripture are full of practical advice for how to live in the way of Jesus.
For example, our church has been working through the life of Moses. In our class geared to new disciples and those interested in learning about Jesus, we worked through the story of the plagues and how there was something in each plague that applied to how to live as a follower of Jesus. Very practical. And helpful.
Here are the key points we made.
Water into blood. Pharaoh’s magicians could do the same thing. Satan will often try to copy God. Following Jesus leads to a life of peace and joy. Satan will often try to promise peace and joy by succumbing to temptation. Don’t be fooled.
Frogs. Pharaoh wanted the frogs gone. When? Tomorrow. Satan loves delaying tactics. Put off the decision.
Gnats. Pharaoh’s magicians could not replicate this event. Satan cannot do what God does.
Flies. Finally, Pharaoh said, “Go worship your God. Just stay in the land.” Compromise. Follow God if you think you must. But do not leave the world, culture, or friend circle of your old life.
Livestock die. But only the Egyptians, not those of God’s people. God does protect, provide, care for his people.
Boils. So bad that Satan’s magicians could not even appear. God will defeat Satan.
Hail. This is where Pharaoh admits he has sinned and that God is right. But he doesn’t change anything. Satan will live with your good intentions as long as you do not act on them.
Locusts. Pharaoh says go worship, but only the men. Satan is always against the family.
Darkness. Again, Pharaoh tells them they can go, even with their families. Just not their possessions. Satan wants to keep your things from God. Because your heart will be where your stuff is.
Passover. It is still true today. Your house will not be saved without the blood of the Lamb.
These are ways we try to help new disciples to see how the Bible is full of life advice so we will be able to follow Jesus.
And this approach doesn’t only help new disciples. It helps this old disciple also.
